Having both the internal and external running seemed to cause other flakey behavior.

For me the only way to have a workable configuration is to disable the monitor sleep function and the mac sleep function and run it in clamshell mode. Other times the bottom half of the screen displays garbage. Upon waking it won't resync again and you have to reboot and start over. Your mac goes to sleep, your monitor goes to sleep, your mac display adapter goes to sleep and all bets are off.

So you boot up your machine plug it in and it works (usually). When it will sync (which is 90% of the time for me) it does so only once per boot. Still sometimes it won't sync and you have to reboot and try again. You need to make sure the monitor is set with display port 1.2 and that all the energy saving settings (particularly turning off after inactivity) are disabled. First you need a good quality mini-display port to display port cable or it won't sync at all. There are reports over the internet that folks have gotten it working and I can confirm that I have a 24 inch LG 4K (24UD58) monitor connected to my mid-2012 macbook air and it works though there are many problems with it. As you can see from the article posted above the official position is that 4K monitors are not supported on the macbook air mid-2012.
